Dr. Joel Aronowitz: "So, people ask me, 'How long will an implant last?' and the truth of the matter is, even though the FDA recommends that implants, silicone implants, be changed every 10 years, and there's a certain failure rate with saline implants, a lot of implants can last patients a whole lifetime. And I have the pleasure today to see a patient that we did, we did 25 years ago, back when I was 15, and we put saline implants in, and she's done very well for all those years. And I see her every once in a while, but she has a beautiful figure, and these implants were placed through a perioreal incision right here, and so there's no scar that shows on the breast. And she had a pretty breast, but it was small, and we put a good size implant in, and this is a saline implant, and the saline implant has done very well for all those years.
She has a nice medial fullness here, and that's because the implant is over the muscle, in this case, not under the muscle. And if you put your hand on your hip and you flex your muscle here for me. So, here's the muscle, and there's very little, if any, movement of the breast because the implant is on top of the muscle there. And so also, when she examines her breast, she can feel all the breast tissue because all the breast tissue is on top of the implant. So, this is a very nice result from a saline implant that's placed over the muscle; it's a technique that we don't use too much anymore. Usually, the saline implants are put under the muscle, and many times we use silicone implants nowadays, but we can still see we can have an implant for many, many years, that's a saline implant placed very simply over the muscle, especially in a patient who has a nicely shaped breast to begin with. So, thank you for letting me share that with everyone. It's good to see you again, for all these years."
