Dr. Joel Aronowitz: “Can any surgeon do a skin sparing or nipple sparing mastectomy? no not yet unfortunately hopefully within a few years every surgeon who treats breast cancer will be able to offer these more modern operations but not yet so it's incumbent upon the patient to be her own advocate or her caregiver or her advocate to go to bat for her and do the research what you need to look for is a surgeon who understands how to do these operations and is willing to do these operations because they require more training and more work to do them so the best thing is to ask up front if your surgeon offers skin sparing nipple sparing mastectomy what percentage of their cases are done that way what are the indications and before you let anyone cut on your breast to make sure that you understand where the incisions are being placed and if you're going to be a candidate for that kind of more modern natural appearing surgery.”
