Dr. Joel Aronowitz: “The nipple inverts because there are about a dozen tubes going up to the nipple that deliver milk to the nipple. Those are called ducts, like the ductwork that delivers hot and cold air to a room. So those tubes or those ducts come up to the nipple. If they're a little too short, then they'll pull the nipple down. And even to the point that they pull the nipple down inside the breast and then the nipple is inverted. So, the answer to that typically is to pull that nipple out with suction. And a woman who is pregnant and is going to nurse or is already nursing can use a little suction device that's made for that purpose. Woman who is not nursing can use the same device, little suction cup device to stretch out those ducts so that the nipple will come out. That doesn't always work and when it doesn't work then a surgical procedure can be done to release those ducts and allow the nipple to come out and stay out. So inverted nipple fairly common 10 to 15% of women have an inverted nipple. It's not a disease. It doesn't cause any problems other than cosmetic and sometimes hygiene problems. So inverted nipple for shortened ducts is the reason.”
