Dr. Joel Aronowitz: “Hi, I'm Dr. Aronowitz. I want to tell you very quickly what a skin sparing or nipple sparing mastectomy is. It's important to understand that one mastectomy is not the same as another. A woman can have her breast tissue removed either to treat cancer or to reduce the risk of developing cancer and still look very natural.
And that's what a nipple sparing mastectomy does. It removes all of the breast tissue through a small incision, either underneath the breast or around the nipple. The breast tissue is carefully removed, and then the volume of the breast can be restored with either an implant or fat from another part of the body.
It's important to understand that a skin sparing or nipple sparing operation is just as safe as a more traditional mastectomy, which results in a big scar across the chest and a deformed breast even with reconstruction. Evidence has shown over the last several years again and again that when done correctly in the right patient population, sparing the nipple and sparing the skin of the breast can result in a perfectly safe operation from a cancer reduction standpoint.”
