Dr. Joel Aronowitz: “Okay, here's a quick why I don't like ice or heat after surgery. Very simply, both heat and cold can cause severe burns and I've seen multiple over the years and the ice can be a good anti-inflammatory, heat can be good to stimulate circulation to an area, it can give good relief from discomfort sometimes and control swelling as can cold. But the risk of burns due to excess cold or excess heat is too high. A post-surgical area can be sort of numb and if a patient falls asleep with hot or cold because of the numbness they won't wake up from the pain and when they do wake up and it's too late and a full thickness, sometimes very severe burn can occur. So that's why I generally discourage hot and cold after surgery.”
