TV anchorman: “0.1 million men had some type of cosmetic procedure done last year. We asked Dr. Joel Aronowitz of the University Stem Cell Center in Santa Monica, California about the most popular plastic surgery procedures that men are requesting.”

Dr. Joel Aronowitz: “Well, men are coming in for plastic surgery nowadays like they haven't before, and many times for men it's because in their career their appearance is holding them back because they have a more tired appearance or more aged appearance. So it usually focuses on one specific issue for men. In their career, their appearance is holding them back because they have a more tired appearance or more aged appearance. So it usually focuses on one specific issue for men. What is a very common complaint and a very specific complaint in my male population is the turkey gobbler deformity, which is a hanging skin in the neck that is very apparent and it's very hard to hide. Other things for men are the eyes, the upper and lower eyelids, especially skin hanging over the upper eyelids. The other thing that is common is a volume problem in the face. For example, losing fat in the upper face, when fat accumulates in the lower face as it does in men and women, it actually enhances most men's appearance but squares off the face in a woman. But in men, loss of the fat around the eyes causes a sunken look, causes a difference between the eyelid and the cheek, causing this tear trough. That catches a deep shadow, especially when there's some extra fat in that secondary bag, if you will, in that cheek area. Those are the common kind of problems we see with men. So the neck in women usually goes along with aging in the lower face, but in men many times the lower face is fine, but it's really just that there is a tremendous amount of laxity of skin here in the neck, especially the central neck. And it could be that there's fat causing a very oblique angle here and an obliteration of the nice jaw line, or even more commonly, just simply skin and the skin hanging down in the front part of the neck here causing a big band.”

TV anchorman: “Dr. Aronowitz explains the different procedures he performs for men.”

Dr. Joel Aronowitz: “We've seen an evolution of the type of surgery men have asked for. For example, in the neck, one of the things that's driven the interest in this turkey gobbler issue is the fact that there are a lot of men out there who've lost a lot of weight. And after the weight loss, we see a better overall appearance, but we see the effects of the skin being stretched out over time, and this is one that's very visible. A direct neck lift is an operation for men by and large over the age of 60, sometimes 55, because then there's enough aging in the skin to hide the scar almost completely. And in those patients that really have a problem that is limited to the neck, it's an ideal operation.”

TV anchorman: “Dr. Aronowitz discusses the success of his procedures.”

Dr. Joel Aronowitz: “A direct neck lift is a wonderful operation for the right man because it's such a minimally invasive procedure. It doesn't involve opening up the whole neck the way we have to for a woman's face lift or neck lift. It involves a very simple operation, and the recovery from the operation is very simple. It's very straightforward, and there are minimal complications and pain associated with the healing."
